This Swiss duo presents with Renaître de ses fanges over one hour of immersive, crushing black metal. The music feels heavy throughout, really pinning the listeners to their seats, all wrapped within a dark, melancholic atmosphere that makes this flirt a bit with blackened doom without getting there. The keyboards are omnipresent but not overbearing and add to the heaviness of the music and the bleakness of the dark atmosphere. The harsh vocals —in French—are sometimes decipherable enough and are just as torturing and poignant as the music. Most of the time I'm not particularly fond of long albums as they tend to have some fillers or simply overstay their welcome, but that's certainly not the case here. I've found it hard to resist just putting the album on repeat play and listening to it all day long.
