Seven long years after the bellowing face-ripper that was their reunion album Fanatico, Finland's homegrown band of bloodthirsty warlords Barathrum have finally come back to tear our remaining flesh to ribbons with Überkill. This is not a band that has gone soft with age, no, they're still as vicious, primal, and relentless as the early days and channel it into the raw aggression and dark, oppressive atmosphere that made them legends to begin with. The only real difference is that this is the best they've ever done it, with each track serving a masterclass in unfiltered intensity and displaying sharper, more focused musicianship and songwriting than ever before, all while staying true to the primal essence of violence and hate that first defined them. This is black metal at its most ferocious, uncompromising and unyielding, as done by real legends, and I'm happy to see them still blazing a path of fire and destruction without losing as much as a step.
