Mexico's Phantom have gone a little crazier with their speed/thrash on Tyrants of Wrath. The speed is obviously at the rendezvous, guaranteed to mess you up if you try to headbang to the whole album, and their thrash is just as raw as on the previous album, but they've also thrown in some more traditional heavy metal influences that pop up here and there, giving a tiny bit of relief to the listener. It's nothing original overall, but the delivery has just the right attitude and the combination of old-school with a somewhat modern vibe and speed is pretty fucking cool, making this one of those albums that you want to play on repeat. Clean vocals are used on the more heavy metal number "Nimbus" and, while they are fine, I much prefer the harsh, take-no-prisoner vocal style used elsewhere. The song feels like it doesn't belong, but it's nonetheless good, with some early '80s Maiden underpinnings. Fun, neck-breaking stuff throughout. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
