The first album of this German one-man band, Force du mal ("Force of evil"), never really takes off despite me giving it plenty of chances (I must be up to 15+ listens as I write this). Death/thrash is the weapon of choice here, with some traditional heavy metal elements that mellow it down a little, but not too much. The vocals are kind of thrashy, sometimes cleaner, sometimes borderline growly; a bit too varied and going from "OK this sounds good" to "no... just... no..." There's a bit of a "plastic feel" to the sound that makes this sound kind of clean despite things being relatively raw, and that has bugged me with every listen. I like what he's trying to do with his mix of heavy metal in his death/thrash, but the combination of the varying vocals and that kind of plastic feel makes it fall flat for a first attempt. It's not bad if you just leave it as background music without paying too much attention to it. There are some cool passages here and there, especially the more melodic bits and some of the solos, but not enough to save the album as a whole. |
