Main man Athenar continues to add to his band Midnight's ever-expanding catalogue of releases with an album of covers entitled Steel, Rust and Disgust. Focusing on influences from his home state of Ohio and especially the city of Cleveland, the record contains a wide variety of source material. Some are obscure, like heavy metal band Kratos and thrash band Synastryche while others have a convoluted claim to fame, like Rocket from the Tombs, whose members wrote the song "Sonic Reducer" that was later made famous by punk band Dead Boys. There are also a few acts you might not expect, such as early shock rocker Screamin' Jay Hawkins and David Allan Coe, famous for writing the number one country song "Take this Job and Shove It." Every entry on Steel, Rust and Disgust has been given the Midnight treatment and it reminds me of a lot of early '80s punk albums from bands like Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag and Dead Milkmen. It is always fun to hear the material that influences bands I like, and Steel, Rust and Disgust is plenty fast, heavy and chaotic but I can't say it holds much replay value for me. It is an interesting collection of obscure heavy music from the state of Ohio, but all the tracks run together. If your tastes include punk, you'll probably enjoy this, but I'll be reaching for Let There Be Witchery when I need my Midnight fix.
