The UK has been experiencing something of a resurgence of cool Doom bands, and this is definitely one of them. This band has a weird name and they are a weird band, mixing in classic Sabbathy Doom sounds along with more progressive, acoustical interludes and melodies that draw from occult rock, psychedelia, and even gothic music. The strength of the songwriting is very high through the whole album, and the strange shifts and involved riffing make for a very textured and intricate listen. Guitarist Mark Sayer is a huge find, as his soulful, agile guitar melodies add so much depth to these songs. Vocalist Dan Flitcroft has really developed into a first-rate singer, with grit and harsh sounds when he wants them, but capable of soaring notes as well. The melodies are also really good. "Devil's Daughter," "King Beyond the Gates" and the two-part closer "Avon & Avalon Parts 1 and 2" lay down hooky, heavy, layered Doom. "Foreigner" is a standout track, with the first four minutes being good, but then it shifts into a passage of gorgeous, startling guitar and vocal melodies that stopped me in my tracks. A stunning album from a band who are just getting going. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
