I continue my journey through the back catalog of obtuse UK Doom band Sergeant Thunderhoof. This was their third one, right before they detoured into the all-acoustic Delicate Sound of Thunderhoof (which I actually think is a great album, but it doesn't belong here). It's hard to believe this band had only existed for like 5 years at this point, as they are already riding a creative high few bands ever reach. There's nothing outrageously original about the approach here. This is very retro UK Doom with the expected callbacks to Sabbath and Cathedral, but this band has so much talent that they make it sound fresh and original. Guitarist Mark Sayer is really killing it here, with heavy riffs and long, trippy leads that remind me of Shelton in his glory days. If you like retro Doom with a layer of psychedelia and spacey/occult vibes, then this is a band you should dig into. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
