The name of this Australian band fooled me into assuming they played doom metal and perhaps there is an element of that here, but their debut album, The Mind's Eternal Storm is mainly atmospheric black metal. Lone member Dan Elkin doesn't rely on a lot of folk melodies or a ton of keyboards to give his compositions a feeling of desolate open spaces and dark, pensive moods, just solid playing and songwriting that is spot on. Neither the clean nor the harsh singing is amazing but serve the songs as they should. The guitar tone is a strength for Echoes of Doom, especially on "Wanderer of the Mind's Storm" where Elkin strikes the perfect balance between the cold, stinging sound and the somber melody. I don't know how revolutionary The Mind's Eternal Storm is in the atmospheric black metal field, but it sounds quite good to me, and I would say fans of Wolves in the Throne Room, Winterfylleth and bands in that mold should definitely give it a listen.
