There are, unsurprisingly, a lot of bands named some variety of "Morke" (Norwegian for "darkness.") This one is from Minnesota and has only been around for 8–9 years or so. Despite that, this is one of those solo bands that is quite productive, so this is already the fourth full-length album. I was startled, right away, by how much this sounds like Obsequiae—the guitar tone, the style of the medieval riffs and melodies—all it's missing is the delay pedal, but that's not a dig against this album, which I like quite a lot. Moody, Dark Ages Black Metal with a lot of haunting melodies and dark atmosphere. I won't be reductive and say that if you like Obsequiae you will like this, but you will, and there is more going on here than just homage. A band to watch. |
