I have not found much joy in the prior Mausoleum Gate releases I've reviewed, but that is changing with their third album, Space, Rituals and Magick. The band still plays a blend of '70s occult hard rock and very early NWOBHM, but new singer Jarno Saarinen takes their music to a new level. I wouldn't say he's amazing but his vocals fit Mausoleum Gate's sound far better than prior singers. He can belt it out but also deliver a laid-back, dreamy performance, like on "Witches Circle." While Mausoleum Gate have their own sound, I hear influences like Black Sabbath in the vocal lines on "Vision Divine," and Pagan Altar in the folky, occult melodies on "Sacred Be Thy Throne," but Warlord, Uriah Heep and Hawkwind are also in the mix. I think the songwriting is their best so far, especially the title track, which is a fantastic, NWOBHM-inspired rocker, and the whole album feels cohesive and engaging. Mausoleum Gate has put it all together this time and come up with a great release for those into all the good things that came out of '70s hard rock and the early NWOBHM.
