Sypsis are a trio from Greece that have been around for a little over a decade, but their (as of writing) recent sophomore album, Annihilated Existence, is the first I've heard from them. Musically, this is a sharp, technical breed of thrash in the vein of Coroner, Acrophet, and maybe Sadus in their harsher moments, complete with oddball time signatures, sudden tempo shifts, impressive instrumental flourishes, and even some jazz-fusion flavor to give it all some identity. A sound this varied and precise generally benefits from a professional production, and Symbolic Π Studios (don't ask me how to pronounce that) did just that with an organic but punchy sound whose mix gives everything clarity and bite. I'd say more, but at only seven songs totaling around 35 minutes, this is a bit brief to go into more detail about but making me want more is more a point in Sypsis' favor than anything. Fans of intelligent, energetic thrash with a technical twist will find a lot to love here, and if we're lucky, it won't take another 10 years for their next album to come out. |
