This is some pretty cool doom-tinged old-school heavy metal. It didn't really do anything for me on the first couple of listens, but it's now been in regular rotation for a while. The "doom" aspect might hint at something borderline depressing, but it's more of a doom influence that seeps in musically and not so much the usual atmosphere associated with the genre. The heavy metal on offer is actually fun and catchy for the most part, mixing the rough edge of the NWOBHM era stuff with that of '70s heavy rock, all served with a good serving of heaviness. In his review of Worship New Gods, Mike mentions the vocals being bad and I can't comment on that, as I haven't heard that album, but I like the vocals on Destiny of the Gods. They're often the catchiest part of the songs and I found myself wanting to sing along more than once (not that I would ever do that, as that would be horrifying). If you're familiar with several artists on Shadow Kingdom Records, Coven 13 is a good fit in that stable. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
