This is the fourth full-length from Norwegian melodic black metal band Brotthogg, essentially a one-man project helmed by Kristian Larsen Moen, who handles all instruments except vocals and also takes care of the songwriting and lyrics. Brotthogg play fast, melodic, and heavily guitar-driven black metal that evokes Armada-era Keep of Kalessin first and foremost, but also draws on bands like Dissection. The technical ability on display on Ved Veis Ende is top-notch, and combined with strong songwriting and a polished, clear production job, the album is highly listenable. The guitar tone is particularly crisp, giving the songs real staying power. The drumming is furious, and the vocals range from standard growls to more Kampfar-esque commanding shouts that add a dramatic flair to the material.

Brotthogg thrive on the unpredictability of speed and chaos, and the faster tracks are especially well executed. "Fram Kryp Fanden," "I Daudastund," "I Vanviddets Vold," and "Skarpretter" are prime examples of the band shining in full blasting fury. I'm less enthusiastic about the slower cuts: while generally decent, songs like "Pesta" and the closer "Mare" are not nearly as captivating as the stronger tracks. Still, despite these drawbacks, there's plenty to enjoy here for fans of melodic black metal that's fast, sharp, and easy to digest.
