This is the second album from this California Funeral Doom band who have put out two full-lengths in three years of existence—unheard of for a Doom band. Don't they know you're supposed to go at least 15 years between albums? Jokes aside, this is a deeply impressive work in the genre by a band who appear to already have grasped the essentials of Funeral Doom. A lot of bands think you just have to play slow, but it's about creating a soundscape with chords and melodies that build tension so the composition as a whole has a sense of progression and resolution despite being, like, 20 minutes long. The riffs here are big and orchestral, with the vocals more like a harsh background growling that is a part of the overall sound. The production is really good, building layers and giving the sound a feel of space and grandeur. These songs take a long time to get to the point, but there is a point, which is important. If you love Tyranny, Thergothon, Funeral, or other arcane and obscure Funeral Doom, then this is something you should not miss. |
