Garde is a Dutch band that is unapologetically going for a late period Bathory sound on their debut album, Harbingers of Revenge and War. That means the songs are on the long side with mid-paced, marching tempos, there is a spacious production, echoes of black metal tremolo guitars and sometimes shaky, clean vocals. That is not meant as an insult to singer Dan Capp because we all know Quorthon was not known for his vocals, so his efforts here are true to Bathory ideal this band is shooting for. The riffs are solid but perhaps not amazing and that's probably a good way to describe this album. In Bathory terms, it is more Nordland II than Nordland I and doesn't do anything you haven't heard before or do it so well as to make that irrelevant. On the other hand, if you are a Bathory fan, especially the later material, I can't imagine you not liking Harbingers of Revenge and War as it hits that sound dead center.
