One thing that's important to do, except in the most extreme cases, is to not dismiss an album after the first listen. When I first heard this, my impression was that it was pretty bland. Not bad, just bland. A few listens later and I did a 180. While Hellslaught may not be bringing anything new to the table in the very crowded black/thrash metal space, with Violent Iconoclasm they've come up with a powerful, aggressive slab of metal, complete with tight riffs, the expected harsh riffage—with the occasional early Slayer hellish screams—and more speed than you can shake a stick at. Not sure how you shake a stick at speed, but you get the idea. I'm hearing sounds that take me back to when I discovered such bands as Deströyer 666 and Desaster, to name a few, but Hellslaught's approach is tighter and cleaner, not really swerving much into rawer territory. I can't say I remember much once the album is over, but it's a cool listen while it's on, and I've found myself reaching out for it regularly when I needed my speedy violence fix. |
