This is not a band I was familiar with and this album happens to be over an hour of covers of some of their influences, some of which are suspicious, such as Limp Bizkit (the "Full Nelson" cover opening the album). There is quite a mix of nu-ish bands, heavy, thrash, punk and even freaking David Hasseholff on here. Rather than name-drop all 20 bands, I'll direct you to the Metal-Archives page for the album: https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Godslave/Champions/1321809 While I'm not particularly fond of some of the styles or bands covered on Champions, I must say that Godslave did a really good job "thrashifying" the songs, even the Limp Bizkit cover. I absolutely cannot stand that band, but the cover is actually fun. Overall it's almost like having a bit of a rocking party, with a good number of known songs, like "Hard as Iron," "Stay Hungry," "Stormrider" and "Sucker," and I found even the covers of non-metal songs fit very well with the rest, so despite these 20 songs being all over the place, overall the resulting ensemble is pretty cohesive. Not essential, like most (all?) cover albums, but it's a lot of fun. |
