Hurt is a Death Metal band hailing from Vancouver, Canada. The songs are pretty short (6 totalling a little under 15 min. running time) and to the point. I was a bit concerned that this could be a long 15 minutes when I first listened to the CD since the vocals on the first song are a bit annoying in the first song, pretty much screeching vocals later joined by more DM-like growls. The growling vocals take over the lead starting with the second song, and even though I'm not much into growl-type vocals, they're better than what was on the first song. The screeches do show up in the other songs but to a much lesser extent. Musically, this is in-your-face brutal Death Metal, and I detect an Immolation influence here, with some similar riffs and the overall feeling of some songs. Thankfully, unlike some other DM bands, Hurt do offer some variation, for example on the third track (Lobo) which ends on a somewhat slower, melodic note. This is actually better than many signed DM bands. Some work on the vocals and a better sound on an upcoming release should give these guys quite a push. If you can get past the vocals, this is fifteen minutes of ass-kicking Death Metal. I recommend you check those guys out. |
