Messiah's Kiss' first album, "Prayer For The Dying" was an album that surprised me, as it was an amazing piece of kick-ass 80's flavored metal. Short on originality, but long on riffs to headbang to and songs to sing along with. Great frigging album, and I've had this, their sophomore effort on my 'to get' list for a while now. So here we have the second album for this German band, is it as good as the first?

Well, not really. They have not changed their style – they are still all about Running Wild/Iron Savior style German crunch, and even the guitar tone is exactly like the first album, so this is very much like "Prayer For The Dying Part II"- except that this album is not as good, or as much fun as the first one. There are some great tunes on here, no doubt. "Uncaging Rebellion" is a kick-ass opener, and "Metal Til We Die" may be cheesy, but with a head-stomping chorus like this, I'm not going to lie and say the song doesn't rule when it does. "Road To Exxtasy" has a silly name, and cheesier lyrics, but it kills, and "Blackhawk" is a great slower burn of a song with some awesome riffs.

But there is too much stuff on this album that is just OK, and lacks the infectious energy and edge of the good stuff. Songs like "Believer" and "Run And Hide" that have promising riffage, but just never get good. 4 real killer songs is not a great ratio on an album with 14 tracks, even if it's only 12 real songs. "Tears In The Rain" is the only real bad one though – just a horrible overinflated ballad with some Christina Aguilera soundalike caterwauling on the backing vocals – awful. "Dog Idols" is just a few minutes of sounds that are either growling or belching – I can't tell which.

So "Metal" is a decent album with 4 really good songs, one real dog, two nothing tracks, and 7 songs that are just OK. It's not a bad disc, but after the awesome debut I was really hoping for more from this band. I know Messiah's Kiss can do better than this, and I hope they will with their next one.
