This Swedish band's first demo – "Haunted Grounds" – was promising, but it did not foretell this. It seems that the band has rectified every little problem that their first demo suffered from. "Chimera" is Blackshift's second demo and already this band sounds like they have 10 years under their belts.

What Blackshift have done is crank up the aggression by a million notches, inserted a meaner and more aggressive guitar presence, choppier and much brutal riffs, and brought in a drummer who unleashes the double bass flawlessly every once in a while as if it is a slave under his perfect command. "Chimera" is a great demo as far as modern thrash metal goes. Fans of "The Haunted" should find a lot to like in this band. There is also a good dose of the old Bay Area sound presented to us, but this is still mainly about the new wave of thrash metal with the harsher vocal style. The vocals are of the rough and unsung shouts and full speed variety. I reckon they would be an acquired taste. Not quite growls, not quite clean. Again…they're something to get used to. From the very beginning as the intro riff kicks in, you will know very well what is to follow. Angry, fast and brutal thrash metal! Clenched fists, gritting teeth, and a shaking neck are normal symptoms. The verses of all three songs are just insane and deliver awesome speed and overall musicianship. The finishing part of "Chaos To Order" features some melodic leads and singing vocals which sound a little out of place, but maybe the band is experimenting there. I don't know. It sounds okay, just a little unusual. That said, "Chaos To Order" is perhaps the most killer track on this demo. Constant repeat on my player is what it got!

The only problem I have with this is that it is too short and I'd want it to be longer. I can't give a 14 minute demo a rating, but a full length album consisting of songs like this would be very close to a perfect score.

Alright….Somebody sign this band already.
