This EP was the first release from Rampage and already the band was establishing itself as unclassifiable. Just like the full-length albums that followed cannot be cornered into a specific genre, the seven songs here are about as diverse as it gets: The first two songs are a kind of mix of hard rock and metal that you sing along to, then "Deadrot" follows as a Death/Thrash attack. "The Round Mound of Rebound" is much slower, both in musical and vocal delivery and the lyrics are so hilarious I almost laughed out loud in my office while listening to it (feminists might not find it funny though - this is the kind of lyrics you need to take lightly.) The extremely short "Cocksucker" (as in song length, not as in some short cocksucker) is a grind song - thankfully it is short, clocking in at 27 seconds(!) A cover of Mayhem's "Deathcrush" is next, with the main difference with the original being the vocal delivery (I'll side with Rampage's version on this one), and the sound is much more "muddy" here, giving the sound a more lo-fi feel overall. The closer "Bloody Leg (The Wifebeatah Mix)" is more of a black metal-styled affair with a slight doom-ish atmosphere to it, with a little demented twist, courtesy of the vocals. I wouldn't call this essential (unlike, say, their "Bellum Infinitum" full-length), but it sure is entertaining and the wide variety of genres in such a short release do make this interesting. From reading Lord Vic's comments on the web site, these songs are not to be taken seriously, so take it as such. This EP is out of print, but I felt like reviewing it anyway. ;) |
