I am always wary of bands touted by CM press releases as the 'next big thing', because they say the same thing about shit bands like Shadows Fall, but this is a pleasant surprise. Hatesphere are a Danish band who manage to sound very Swedish, and this is their third release.

The band calls themselves Death/Thrash, but I would put the Thrash first, as this is much more thrashy than such crossover bands normally are. Hatesphere crunch out some really killer riffage on here in true thrashy style, reminding me a lot of The Crown in spots – which is a very good band to be compared to. The music is energetic and heavy, with a lot of groove to it yet without becoming simplistic. The vocals are a disappointment, as frontman Jacob Bredahl is just not very good. He has one of those annoying, screamy vocal styles as are quite popular with crap bands like Soilwork, but they just don't help the music at all. I can tolerate them, especially when the music is as thoroughly foot-to-ass as it is here, but they aren't good at all. Fortunately the guitarwork and songwriting are up to the challenge of making up for the sorry-ass vocals.

Overall Hatesphere slam out an enjoyable album. It isn't original, or classic, but it is compelling and kicks major amounts of ass. I see this band drifting more into the metalcore/mallcore camp in the future, and that will be too bad, but "Ballet Of The Brute" smokes just the same.
