The Devil And The Whore

Rated 4.22/5 (84.44%) (9 Votes)

"The Devil and the Whore" bears Megiddo's signature sound - raw crunching guitars, powerful drumming, raw and very distinct vocals, and damn it, this stuff is catchy - well, to some extent, after all this is Black Metal. Let's just say that the music is of a higher quality than many, many other BM bands. The vocals are also more "pleasing" (for lack of a better word) than other BM bands. Instead of the omnipresent screeches, here the vocals are just raw, and actually decipherable. That's refreshing in a genre where vocalists make it a point to sound like screeching tires.

Musically, this is keyboard free (good, keyboards would totally ruin this) and Megiddo favors heaviness over speed, although there are a couple of pretty speedy songs. The music has a cold and grim feeling to it but is still something you'll feel like headbanging to. There's an 80's feeling to this, music with no frills that's sounds good because it's good music. Powerful and without compromise. If you've heard their demo "The Final War", the material here is along the same lines.

The album also includes covers of "Violence and Force" by Exciter and "Take This Torch" by Razor. Very good picks, and a very good covers as well. Needless to say, "Violence and Force" is one, if not the fastest track on the album. The closing track (untitled) is a little over 3 minutes of what sounds like explosions, just like the beginning of the first track.

This is not only one of the best BM releases out there, but it also ranks high among the best metal albums. Like other Barbarian Wrath releases, "The Devil and the Whore" is limited to 666 hand-numbered copies.
