I was expecting this album to suck so much that I must admit I am a little agreeably surprised by the end result. That's the good news: This is not a horrible album. The bad news: As a Dissection album, this is still a major deception. Overall this is melodic death metal that borrows from pre-full-suck In Flames, say a mix between Colony and a mostly darker-sounding Clayman. Now by "darker", I mean the lighter side of "dark". This is quite pop-ish at times, a bit too happy for Dissection. This is the happy sound you expected from In Flames back in 2000, not what you'd expect from a Satanic powerhouse. I've listened to this album many times, and I never felt like I was listening to Dissection, but rather to some In Flames-influenced melodic death outfit. With the whining out of the way, there are some good musical moments here, especially some of the guitar work that often grabbed my attention. It goes to show that the talent is still there, but unfortunately it is underused. At the end of the disc, what you have is an average melodic death album, no more no less. Not bad to the point of having the urge to not put it on repeat, unless you hard a die hard of the band's early material, in which case I think the majority of those will shake their heads in disgust.

Fans of melodic death metal who are not familiar with early Dissection (or are not obsessed by it) will probably find something to like here. This is better than what the other big melodic death outfits such as In Flames have offered us in recent years, but it is still rooted in the sound that marked the beginning of their downfall. Better than many recent melodic death albums, but much worse than Dissection's first two albums.
