Just hours after I published my review of Silencer's awful first full-length back in March, I got a message from someone telling me that I needed to hear Kozmos, just to see how good this band used to be. Since he had an extra copy he offered to send it to me for review. So here it is. In short, that guy was absolutely right. Kozmos is a barrage of speed/thrash blended with traditional heavy metal that doesn't sound too dated but doesn't have the annoying "modern" (most of the time, if I use "modern", it means "gay") sound either. You know something is good when you can play it over and over without getting tired and its most noticeable shortcoming is the short length. In this short time, you get treated with everything from a slow and quiet intro, to drum-filled barrages of heaviness all the way up to fast, f-a-s-t guitar shredding. This EP showed Silencer's potential back in the day, and very little of it survived in their first album. A damn shame. The vocals also don't have all the retarded annoyances that can be found on the album. I can't say I'm that crazy about the vocals here, but it's a lot better than on their recent output and also fit the music rather well. They're just not too varied and lacking a bit of emotion, but not a turn off either. Definitely a great EP, and the only Silencer material I can recommend at this time (I have yet to hear their other EPs released in 2001 and 2002.)
