This is a damn near perfect DVD for any Iced Earth fan with an incredible set list and the phenomenal Matt Barlow on vocals. First let me just say that if you have been following what Schaffer has been saying about the footage being bad, I have no idea what he was talking about. The footage is of extremely good quality. The only thing I can see him griping with is some of the editing is kind of, for lack of a better word, stupid. I don't see any reason why headbanging should ever be in slow motion and there was a time when there was no picture for a second. The only other thing that could have been better would be some extra features that are worthwhile. The backstage footage is kind of fun, but Jon's tour of Athens is pretty pointless and boring. I like in the pre-concert footage when the band is making its way to the stage, one of the band members says "Hello Cleveland!" in a Spinal Tap reference. It's no fault on Century Media for not having more footage since they did the best with what they had available. Something I found really interesting on the DVD was the performance of Stormrider. Jon Schaffer takes on all vocal duties. I think he sounds damn good, as good as John Greely sounded on the original album. This makes me yearn for an album in the thrashy style of Night of the Stormrider with Jon on vocals. I don't think Ripper's style fits Iced Earth very well. Ripper is an amazing vocalist but lacks the aggression that Greely, Barlow, and Schaffer shows that he has on this DVD. Enough of my rant on how I'd like to see Schaffer perform vocals a future Iced Earth album and back to the DVD. This is a great DVD and if you are an Iced Earth fan in the least pick this up immediately. |
