I don't get Cruachan at all. By which I mean that I don't understand their career, or why anyone cares about them, as they have yet to produce an album that is in any way compelling. I've worked my way through Folk-Lore, Pagan, and now this one. In all those albums I have yet to find a Cruachan song that is not either dull or irritating. This band seems to think that if they throw enough paint at the wall, some of it will stick, instead, we just get a big mess. The riffs are sometimes good, but then they get run into the ground through repetition or they segue into some obnoxious singsong bullshit that also repeats itself too much. Mostly Cruachan suffer from a lack of originality, as they churn through all the standard Folk Metal topics (Ulster, Cuchulainn, Famine) along with several stabs at Tolkien along the way. Oh, and they also entitle a song "Coffin Ships", which only brings to mind the awe-inspiring song of the same name from Primordial – unquestionably Ireland's greatest band; as well as another version of "The Wild Rover", which was done so much better by Tyr several years ago. You cannot tell me there wasn't another folk song they could have done. But no, Cruachan just go about their business ripping off everything in sight and trying to sound original. Yet inviting comparisons to Primordial and Tyr can only point up how deficient this band really is. I really, really hate this album. It gets a point for some listenable moments, but overall the experience of listening to it makes me wish death on those responsible for it. There are many fine Folk Metal bands at work today, from Pagan Reign to Skyforger to Forefather to the obscure entries such as Alkonost and Thrudvangar, but Cruachan do not go on that list. Cruachan suck. |
