It is an absolutely remarkable achievement that this album is perhaps the dullest I have ever heard. I love Doom, the more extreme the better - witness my adoration of bands like Thergothon and Wormphlegm - so I know whereof I speak on the topic of Doom Metal of all kinds. Funeralium set out with the express intent of creating the most heartless, brutal, pitiless Doom ever made. Unfortunately, they also created the least interesting album I have heard in years, maybe ever. All the necessary ingredients for great Doom are here: slow riffs, longs songs, painful harsh vocals and a nice heavy guitar sound. But Funeralium forgot one thing: anything remotely interesting to hold the listener's attention. This music creates no tension, no feelings. It has no beautiful melodies, no haunting themes - no atmosphere at all. It just plods along endlessly and never does anything even remotely exciting. I tried to get into this album, but the more I listen to it, the less I like it. Tedious. |
