Review

I'm not going to put a whole lot of effort into reviewing this one, because it wouldn't be worth my time; not for such a limp, lifeless, commercially minded album as this one. So in short, Nightwish were once a fairly decent band, putting out solid but not stellar melodic Power Metal with the interesting twist of being fronted by a female singer with 100% genuine operatic training, but on this album all they really do is chug out boring nu metal/Rammstein rhythms while Tarja wails uninspired vocal lines. The tempo never really gets any faster than mid-paced, and the riffs are all lame and groovy and trying to be "SUPER HEAVAY!" for the mallcore crowd. The songs vary from boring to flat-out unlistenable, with the worst being "Dead Gardens" and "Wish I Had An Angel" by far; although every song sucks to some degree. The "emotion" that the band attempted to convey here (see especially the insufferable ballad "Creek Mary's Blood" for the worst example) is contrived and fake - no better than the "deep" emotions you'd find pouring out of the latest My Chemical Romance album. I don't think I have to say anything else.
