Undefined is a good name for this band, since the "Progressive Death Metal" categorization is a bit too restrictive for their sound, but at the same time it's difficult to put them anywhere else, as the material presented here often defies categorization. You do get a dose of more or less straightforward Swedish-style Death Metal - I could say "not the Gothenburg type", but then again they do touch both the more brutal stuff as well as its much more tame, very distant "cousin". In the midst of blast beats, guttural vocals and brutal heaviness, one will also find clean vocals, very melodic, practically acoustic passages, as well as some parts where this practically feels like a Heavy/Thrash album, plus a few slow, more doomy moments that are a sharp contrast with some of the fastest parts. They even throw in some vocals more akin to Black Metal rasps here and there. Somehow the band has managed to make this unholy mix somewhat coherent, and overall it works. Those who like their Death Metal heavy and brutal and nothing else will probably prefer to steer clear, as this goes into way too many directions, but those other listeners in a more adventurous mood will find there's plenty to discover on this occasionally weird album. |
