After the mighty Tales Of Creation I lost track of Candlemass. With the demise of Enigma and the changes in the music market in the early 90's, this album never got US distribution, and since I was aware that the great Messiah Marcolin had left the band, my interest was lowered. Plus, in those days there was no Internet, and no way to get a hold of overseas imports besides iffy and expensive special orders at the local store. So I missed this album, and now I'm sorry I did.

Now it is a fact that without Messiah this doesn't sound like Candlemass, but the songwriting sounds a heck of a lot more like the classic stuff than their newer albums do. Thomas Vikstrom is no Messiah, but he has a good voice, and he handles the duties here with real charisma. It's the riffs that really sell this album, though, with powerful crunching doom on songs like "Julie Laughs No More", the crushing "Where The Runes Still Speak" and "Temple Of The Dead". The album does lose a little momentum at the end, and the last few songs are not quite up to the standards of the first five, but they are still solid.

A lot of people overlooked this disc, either because they didn't think it would be good, or just because they couldn't find it, but with a reissue making it easily available, there's no reason to pass this album up. It may not quite stand up with the classic Messiah-era albums, but it can hold its own.
