Hate Eternal is one of those bands that seems to be either loved or hated, with little or no in-between. My only exposure to them has been hearing a few songs here and there and seeing them live on their tour promoting I, Monarch, and I left after three songs (I was there for Krisiun, really...) All those songs sounded the same, and I was out of beer money anyway. :) Fury and Flames gives me the same feeling overall: Nothing really sticks out, and after 40 minutes you get this feeling that you've been listening to the same song over and over - save, of course, for "Coronach" which is a pretty quiet outro. What you get here is about 38 minutes of relentless, fast and technical Death Metal: No breathing room, just fast guitars and speedy thunderous drumming through and through, with the occasional cool solos that you can almost miss because, well, after a few minutes you may no longer be paying attention. The vocals are pretty good, your standard Death Metal growls which here blend pretty well with the music, following the musical beat in a very synchronized fashion. There's nothing technically wrong with this album, but it's missing some life, feeling too mechanical. So there you have it - nothing out of the ordinary that you haven't heard before, and frankly a rather bland ensemble - if you're looking for Death Metal with a lot of variety, you'll have to look elsewhere. From what little I know of the band, Hate Eternal fans will probably enjoy this - if you like the style, there isn't much wrong with the album, but this won't bring their detractors to their side of the fence. |
