This is bleak Funeral Doom of the most extreme variety. I am normally a huge Doom fan, and this is the kind of excessive, grim stuff I like. Rigor Sardonicus play slow, slow, slow, as well as grim, grim, grim. I have to say I find this rather featureless, without real riffs, just slow sludging without any kind of real melody. The vocals are a constant low gurgle, and overall this reminds me of bands I love like Tyranny, but really this falls far short of that sort of coolness. Even the slowest, bleakest Doom needs some kind of tune to build the tension and atmosphere, and RS are just relentlessly grinding away at a snails pace, with nothing at all to make their music stand out as music besides extremism. If you like the sound of that, go for it. Rigor Sardonicus have a great sick guitar sound, they just don't do anything cool with it. |
