A quick glance at the track listing makes no secret of this Death Metal band's gore-ish lyrical leanings.  I was expecting some hyperblasting Death Metal that sounded all the same, but Fetid Zombie turned out to be something else.  The expected vocal style is there: The vocals sound like one of my roommates back when I was in university who could speak while burping (interesting, although somewhat disgusting at meal times...)  There are also a few passages where a more screechy style, and even a few clean vocals are used, but it's overwhelmingly the burp-thy-words style that's used throughout the album.  The music, on the other hand, isn't what I expected.  A lot of it is mid-paced, mixing Death with more traditional Heavy Metal and a hint of Thrash.  Some of this stuff is actually catchy, something I've found to be rare in gore Death (from my limited experience with the genre, that is.)  Of course there are those moments where things speed up quite a bit, albeit without breaking speed records - what could be categorized as "mid-paced Death" when comparing against more brutal styles.  Pleasures of the Scalpel is a good twist on the genre, and you can actually tell most of the songs apart.  What a concept! ;)
