When I reviewed their debut last February, I pointed out it was already two years old, so perhaps a second effort was on the way. Well, three months later, I'm reviewing their sophomore release. As it is commonly seen in reviews, I have to say that Letum picked things up where Melencolia Estatica left off. For one thing, the Italian troop kept pretty much the same modus operandi. Where the track listing before was "Meditatio I to IV", on Letum it is "Letum I to Letum V". As I was reading the review of their previous album, I felt that it could pretty much apply to Letum as well. Maybe more relying on faster paces with blast beats and strong bass than before, Letum remains a melodic and melancholic blend of Black Metal. Still no keyboards to be heard, but instead, crafty use of tremolo picking and arpeggios to create a nice melodic touch. Beside the blast/kicking beat and calmer/clean parts, this Italian act manages to throw in some great crushing riffs and distorted guitar work. Such good sounds can be found on my favorite track, "Letum III". I also really enjoyed the cool duo made of tremolo picking and clean arpeggios on "Letum II". Once again, overall a nice Black Metal album, using maybe a bit too much blast beats. Still, Melencolia Estatica is able to create some dark and melodic tones. |
