Man, what an ugly cover art! Well, I guess we should not always judge a CD by its cover, because Assassins Black Meddle Pt.1 is an excellent album! What a surprise was it for me to get a promo from a mainstream, commercially oriented label, Century Media! Hope they won't dump too many of their releases in my mailbox though. As long as it is good Black Metal or some crazy music like this, it's is fine with me.

Their previous Instinct: Decay was already a great album, but this time around, Blake Judd and the boys from Chicago really blew me away! One cannot deny the fact that the addition of Sanford Parker on synthesizers and effects has a major impact on the psychedelic sound structure. This way, more of the 60's and 70's psychedelia à la Pink Floyd has been injected into the veins and heart of Nachtmystium, all of which to my, as well as many of you I hope, greatest pleasure. Of course, the sick vocals of main/madman Blake, and his nice Black and psychedelic guitar playing, play a major role in this insane soundscape. Assassins Black Meddle Pt.1 is said to be the most progressive work the band has ever done, a thing I can only agree with. Melodic, progressive, experimental and dark are words to be added in the description of this American psychedelic Black Metal act. The result is nothing else than a fun, thrilling and real enjoyable album. Amongst all the great tracks are the excellent: "Assassins", "Code Negative" and the trilogy, "Seasick".

Hopefully their signing to a commercially oriented label won't turn Natchtmystium into a money making puppet, which would be a big loss for the underground. But in the end, what counts is the music, and what has been recorded here is bloody good!
