This album makes such a big deal about being troo kvlt Black Metal that I kind of hate to admit that it's not very good. Funeral Forest are a French band who have released a real torrent of demos, EPs, and splits over the years, but this is the first true full-length. The back of the case proudly and ungrammatically proclaims "No key, no femals vocal, no vocals effect, no mix, no modern sounds shit, no trends". I will admit right out that there are none of these things on here. Unfortunately, the list could go on with "No good guitar sound, no good riffs, and no good songs." It's not that this is bad, but it's blah. The riffs are uninteresting, the recording is flat, and the vocals are dull. The acoustic/instrumental parts are the best thing going on here. And do I have to point out how cliché it is to open and close your album with extended pieces from the "Conan" soundtrack? Lame. This disc is too long, too uninspired, and too pretentious for its own good. |
