With their latest demo A Picture Red, Evolved present a mix of Death/Thrash and Black Metal that's overall a bit uneven. Lots of good ideas here, nothing groundbreaking but mostly well executed - the faster passages are the best parts - blazingly fast destructive Death/Thrash that would most likely trigger a deadly mosh pit in a live setting. There are also a good number of more melodic, when not borderline "epic"-sounding passages to tone down the speedfest somewhat, and the Black Metal elements manifest themselves in the use of BM-style screeches and some of the guitar work. All of these taken individually are good. Where A Picture Red more or less fails is at regrouping all of these together into coherent songs. Too much switching back and forth in a short timespan makes the listener feel like the band is just jamming, and that unfortunately hurts the experience, no matter how good the all the tidbits are good individually. A little work needed on the songwriting side, but there's a lot of potential here. |
