MD is a new Heavy/Thrash band hailing from Belgium, and their music goes from very Melodic Heavy Metal all the way to plain hard Thrash. Embracing // The Disease is a good example of an album that could have spent a little more time in the oven before being presented to the public. For one thing, it suffers from poor and uneven production - this feels synthetic, and the drums are just too loud, just to name that. But then again, that I can live with. The vocals are quite uneven, ranging from good to poor - the latter mostly because he either tries to hit a range above his comfortable level, or sometimes because he's just not conveying much emotion, resulting in a rather flat performance. When he gets it right, however, he's very good, so it's just a matter of putting more work into the vocal lines, I guess. On the music side, things are also very uneven. Most of their compositions have some hint of catchiness in them, but often the guitars sound thin as hell, as if they were missing chords or something - I don't know exactly, but something just doesn't sound right here - it's as if most of the riffs are lacking any kind of depth. Reminds me of when I used to screw around with a friend's guitar as a kid and I was just using one or two chords. Now, this is not all bad. They nail the most mellow and melodic stuff pretty well, and when the guitars come to life, there are some headbangable, "fist in the air" moments here. The band's potential can be heard even in the worst parts of the album, but it's just not coming through in this album. More work on some of these compositions and a better production would most likely give birth to an album that could make a bit of noise in the scene. Embracing // The Disease just isn't mature enough. My bet is that it'll be worth checking out whatever they come up with next, it could be a very agreeable surprise. |
