It pains me to say, but about half this album is completely tedious, and on first spin, I thought Paragon had made an out-and-out bad album, but after further listens, I have concluded this is just deeply mediocre. After nine albums, Paragon have begun to go off the rails, and I hope this is as painful as it gets. Let me just marvel at how boring the first four songs on this album are: utterly interchangeable trudges that feature poor riffs, trite songwriting and awful production on the backing vocals in particular — though the production on the whole album is a bit iffy with the exception of the guitars, which have a great chunky, pummeling tone. Things don't change until "Bloodfeast", which is annoying, rather than boring. The old Paragon magic finally kicks in with the killer "Blade In The Dark" and the flat-out smashers "Death Next Door" and "The Killing Hand". "Waxworks" is okay, but then the album gets totally derailed by a FUCKING BACKSTREET BOYS COVER SONG. Thanks guys, thanks a lot, now every time I spin this album I think of either dancing teenaged boys or that fucking scene in Napoleon Dynamite. Fuck. Then there's the bonus track of the Italian version of "The Legacy" off The Dark Legacy, which is utterly pointless. What the fuck happened? Paragon used to be one of the great Heavy Metal bands, but this album is just adequate, and you'd never know this was the same outfit that ripped out Steelbound or Law Of The Blade. A decent album, but nothing to get excited about, and another marker on the road of this band's decline. |
