Recorded at Sunlight Studios with Tomas Skogsberg handling the production duties, Necrophobic's debut album came at a time when many people were striving to get that much sought after 'Sunlight sound'. However, these guys didn't fall into the glut of Entombed clones around the time thanks to them adding in an excellent melodic range into their guitar style similar to the likes of Dissection or Unanimated.

The guitars don't quite have the same slimy sound as their Swedish Death Metal predecessors, having a decent mid-range crunch, but not quite having the same destructive force. The sound they do have suits the riff style perfectly however, working hard to push the melodic licks and flourishes forward amongst the Death Metal tremolo-picked assault, throwing in killer melody-filled solos to keep the old school feel alive. There's even an occasional usage of dramatic keyboards (most notably on the title track), which gives the album a darker, more foreboding edge (even if it's for a very brief moment). I was almost tempted to call this blackened Death Metal, as at times the occasional section does remind you of Dark Funeral (though, I figured that this could just be because guitarist at the time Dave Parland was also in that band at the time of their early releases and he has a pretty recognizable style).

All in all, whilst this isn't the most renowned album in the history of metal classics, it certainly holds its own and contains a lot of features which are immediately recognizable as being the Necrophobic 'sound'. If you're not afraid of having melody in your Death Metal, you could do a lot worse than to check out The Nocturnal Silence.
