This was the EP Slayer put out to keep things stoked after the massive underground response to their debut CD Show No Mercy. Realizing they had a breaking band on their hands, Metal Blade ponied up some money for a real recording job this time, and it shows in the clearer but much less interesting sound of this disc.

Overall the songs on here are more structured, slower, and better played than on the debut – all marks against them in my book. "Chemical Warfare" marks a drift towards the political themes that would utterly ruin Slayer's lyrics later in their career. "Captor of Sin" is better, also shorter, but still too slow and the riffs just are not there. This disc marks where Slayer cut back on the melodic riff-style of their debut and moved into a more standard Thrash direction. Sure, they were still innovating, but in a direction that led to crap later on. Closer and title track "Haunting The Chapel" has better riffs, but is still too slow and while the riff-work is improved from the other two, it's still just okay.

This EP has a legendary rep, but really it is a massive step down from the evil insanity of the first album. The production is more professional, and therefore boring, the riffs are tamed and the lead work is much less prevalent, as is the crazed speed of songs like "The Antichrist". Overall this comes off as a minor effort, not worthy of what came before it.
