I had heard about this band but never actually heard any of their music before I had received this. They were said to mainly be a death metal band but after a few spins I believe there is a lot more to the band than simply another death metal band. Engorged have created 14 tracks of unadulterated piss and venom style death metal with some killer thrash metal influences. On the death metal side of the band the playing is very fast but not to the point where the guitars start to sound muddy and there are plenty of melody lines thrown in by the lead guitarist. The thrash metal side is where the album really shines for me personally with some killer riffs that you can snap your neck to. The vocals range from the deep guttural death style to the more thrash influenced style with the majority being of the latter variety. Plain and simple this is one of those albums perfect for someone in a really bad mood and wanting to get out some serious aggression. There is but one minor complaint I had and that is the amount of voice over movie clips that introduce damn near every song. The beginning of the album starts with old time wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper doing his catch phrase line, "I came here to chew bubble gum and kick some ass and I am all out of bubble gum". I thought this was a perfect opening for the album but then each subsequent song has some sort of movie clip as an intro and it begins to get annoying after a while. They would have just been a lot better off just sticking with the first one. Overall an album that I really enjoyed listening to and something I would really like to see live if they ever stop in Iowa (as if any real metal band would stop in Iowa…heh). Fans of death/thrash metal will definitely find something of interest here and well worth checking out. Recommended. |
