Let Battle Commence is Doomsword's third album and it follows suit to what the band had been doing in previous records. For those that don't know, Doomsword plays Doom Metal (shocker!!!!) but at a faster pace than most bands. They also write songs about war, war and more war (wonder where they get their inspiration). This band is very old-school, they don't use keyboards or need any gimmick whatsoever, they just write great songs. Anyway as I was listening the album, the first thing that I noticed was that the record is massive – eight songs that span over an hour and the shortest one last five minutes. In addition to that, there is a lot of stuff to like on this record as well, like the crushing and beautiful guitars, the powerful drumming and a voice full of testosterone. However, to me the greatest highlight of all is the first rate songwriting that the band displays. Every single song here is interesting and heavy beyond belief; this record contains no filler at all. Songs like the opener "Heathen Assault", "Deathbringer" and "The Siege" will bring a smile to any metalhead, as a matter of fact this applies to every song here and at the end of playing the album you'll just want to hear it again. With this album Doomsword has created a worthy follow up and it proves that you don't need full blown symphonic arrangements in order to create an epic sound. To me this is how a Doom Metal album should sound like. There isn't anything else left to say except that Let Battle Commence is a great if not a perfect record and in my opinion an instant classic. |
