Whoa What a rush! Razor Fist aren't exactly the best nor the most original Heavy Metal band out there, but listening to Metal Minds is almost like a full-body workout: It starts fast and heavy as fuck, and doesn't slow down until it's over. No little intros or acoustic passages to give you time to catch your breath here. Metal Minds is loaded with old school-ish riffs and solos, augmented with some pretty damn solid drumming (and thunderous as well – the drums sure aren't lost in the background on this release.) Basically Razor Fist have taken a few pages off the recipe books of party-ish Heavy Metal bands from the 80s (no, not the glam stuff) and then grabbed a few quick notes from mid-80s Speed/Thrash – think a bit of early Metallica and Exciter, for starters. What I find hard to digest here are the vocals. The vocalist screams almost all the time (and just so we're on the same page, I mean 80-ish metal screams, not gay-ass metalcore screamo crap), and his higher pitch is more often than not very annoying – kind of an assault to your hearing, but in the bad sense of the term. The vocals are pretty forward in the mix as well – quite normal for the genre – but since he screams so high, he often buries the music. With that said, the scream early in the opening track is pretty damn cool. Metal Minds is not revolutionary, but it's a good slab of high-octane, upbeat Heavy Metal – the kind of stuff you put on when you need something to prop you up when you're feeling a little down. If you can get used to the vocals, this is one you'll play on repeat. A little warning: I wouldn't advise listening to this while driving, unless you've got cruise control. ;) |
