OK, where do I start... This is one of those CDs that just won't leave the CD player. Overlorde originally formed in the mid-80s and released a MLP in 1987 then vanished. The band re-formed in 2000 and this demo is their first release with the new lineup, which consists of the original musicians, plus newcomer Bobby Lucas on vocals. The vocals on the demo kept reminding me of something I had heard before and that was driving me nuts, until I finally realized that Lucas was doing the vocals on the first two Seven Witches albums. Mystery solved, and my sanity is saved. :) I ran into this band at Classic Metal Fest 2 in Cleveland and they simply killed live, and the result on CD is just as killer. The four songs presented here are all in the great tradition of mid-80s American heavy metal (no, no, not glam rock!) In other words, this sound as good today as it would have 15 years ago. Lucas on vocals does an excellent job, exhibiting an impressive Halford-esque vocal range (and then some), while the guitar playing is nothing short of impressive, very tight and with some wickedly catchy solos. Add some powerful drumming to the mix, with all instruments benefitting from a very good sound - remember, this is a demo, yet the sound quality far exceeds that of many albums I've heard. There may not be much Overlorde material out on the market yet, but the quality of the songwriting and the musicianship is top notch. The only complaint is that there's only four songs and I'm left craving for more! The band is reportedly looking for a label to release their first full-length albums, so to labels out there, stop releasing crap and sign these guys now! The metal world is badly in need of bands such as Overlorde. OK, I'm done worshipping... For now. ;) |
