Second album for this French band who try very hard to put a certain big, epic sound into their Black Metal. I generally expect good stuff from French bands, but this leaves me lukewarm at best. Hyadningar alternate between fast and slow, the problem being that the transitions are not integral to the compositions, and thus make the songs feel disjointed. Their slow parts are where they do best, with some very cool melodic riffing and a genuine mood created. The problem is that these still do not hang together, and so while they create compelling moments, they wander off, get lost, and end up sounding aimless. When this band plays fast they become completely generic, using these incredibly boring scaling tremolo riffs that sound like 8,000 other bands. The vocals are a relentless dry rasp that does absolutely nothing for the music, it's just there. Hyadningar are trying to push the envelope, but before you experiment, you have to be able to write rock-solid songs or you will just end up with a directionless mess, like this one. |
