Thundra was formed over a decade ago by Harald (ex-Enslaved) on drums, Stein (ex-Einherjer) on bass and a keyboard player by the name of Nils. The vocals and guitar duties are nowadays handled by Steven and Rube respectively. The band has previously released two full-lengths: Blood of your Soul, in 2000 and Worshipped by Chaos, in 2006, which I reviewed back then. Having good memories about Thundra, I was looking forward to listening and finding out what the guys were up to now. Well, looks like they have only improved and could compose, and play, some very good Nordic music. Great cover art, very good sound production and a well written and executed Viking Metal album is what Ignored by Fear is all about. The keyboard player does not try to steal the show, but is a perfectly suitable player with his atmospheric and epic participations. This is mostly a kicking and fierce piece of Viking music. The pace is generally in the mid-fast range, with frequent faster and vicious times. A few acoustic parts are adding a more refine sense of melodiousness in their powerful landscape. You'll find a good balance between the varied modes of their Nordic scenery. Perhaps a bit too much in the fierce range, still this album contains variety, including some nice, clean epic vocals. My favorite compositions are the long lasting opener, "Inner Struggle" and closing track, "The Gate". |
