I'm interrupting some major headbanging and slamming against my apartment walls to write a few words about this metallic onslaught by Canadian thrash legends Razor. Can you say FAST? Back in 1988 some friends were saying that I was listening to fast music, but it was nothing compared to the material on "Violent Restitution", and even by today's standards, it's still some damn fast stuff. The album is titled appropriately as the music is anything but sweet love songs. The warning on the back of the CD probably says it best: "Warning: The musical and lyrical content of this album is NOT recommended for those with a weak heart". From start to finish you are treated with fast, precise crunching guitars and drums that are not overdone (a testimony that you do not need a double bass drum at full speed from start to finish to play extreme music). This a blend of thrash and speed metal (back when speed metal was speed metal...) with a slight hint of hardcore (but not too much-thankfully), with vocals that most of the time are more "spoken quickly" than actually sung - but fitting the music extremely well. To some extent this can be compared to very early Metallica (ah the memories...), but with a cleaner sound, and with a more aggressive overall feel to the music - and definitely nothing remotely resembling a ballad here... hehe... With 14 songs clocking at slightly less than 41 minutes, a lot of the songs are between 2 and 3 minutes and length, but this is not the kind of music with which you write epic songs (would anyone survive that anyway? :)) The band is reportedly working on a new album. In the meantime, I highly recommend this piece of metal history. |
