This is an independent EP from Italian band Xipe Totec, who crank out a definite Nile-ish variety of Death Metal. If you can get past the cognitive dissonance of an Italian band playing Death Metal with Middle Eastern sounds and Mexican mythological themes then this is actually a really good disc. The production is solid, the playing is excellent, and the riffs and melodies are actually quite catchy. Xipe Totec don't overdo the instrumental interludes, and this is a feral EP with some nicely vicious Death Metal on it. This band is not breaking down any barriers, but I have heard plenty of signed bands that aren't half this good. Hell, this is better than anything Morbid Angel have done since 1993. Xipe Totec are a band with serious energy and potential, and they deserve to get signed and record a full-length album, because that would definitely be worth hearing. |
